Stainless castings used in food-processing equipment need to be evaluated as part of the equipment’s cleaning and operating system. A stainless material name and a polished exterior are not complete evidence of suitability. Geometry, surface condition and the actual cleaning exposure all influence the component’s role.
Identify the surfaces that contact product
A food-contact passage, an external support and a sealed mechanical cavity may need different treatment. Mark those areas on the drawing so material selection, finishing and inspection can address the correct regions.
Consider access and drainage in the installed orientation. A pocket that retains material or cleaning solution can create a different design problem from an open surface, even if both share the same nominal roughness requirement.
Include the cleaning cycle in material selection
The operating product is only part of the exposure. Cleaning agents, temperatures and cycles can influence the chosen alloy and surface condition. The responsible equipment designer should establish the applicable requirements for the intended service.
A supplier should not infer compliance with a particular food-contact or hygienic standard from a general application description. If such requirements apply, identify them explicitly in the enquiry and approval process.
Plan finishing around the real geometry
Machining, polishing and other surface treatments have access limitations. A narrow internal region may not receive the same treatment as an exposed face. Discuss how the required condition will be produced and verified before approving a complex passage.
Surface texture and local defects are separate questions. A suitable average roughness does not establish that the surface is free from unacceptable pits or other discontinuities. The acceptance plan should reflect both where relevant.
Define the supplied state and supporting records
Clarify whether the order covers a raw casting, a machined part or a finished component prepared for equipment assembly. Include any cleanliness, traceability and treatment documentation required by the customer.
Tousin Metal can review food-equipment casting requirements with marked contact surfaces and the intended cleaning conditions. Connecting design and finishing to the actual cleaning task gives a more useful manufacturing requirement than specifying stainless steel and a bright appearance alone.
