A pressure or leak test result is meaningful only in relation to a defined procedure and acceptance requirement. Pump and valve castings can be tested at different stages and with different objectives. A simple note saying pressure tested does not explain what was tested or what the result demonstrates.

Distinguish the body from the completed assembly

A bare casting, a machined body and an assembled valve have different test boundaries. Seals, plugs and fixtures can influence the arrangement. The purchase specification should identify the supplied condition and the scope of the required test.

For example, a body test does not automatically establish seat performance in an assembled valve. Likewise, a test performed before final machining may not answer every question about the delivered body. The intended acceptance stage should be agreed clearly.

State the governing procedure rather than inventing a pressure

Test medium, pressure, duration and acceptance criteria should come from the applicable engineering requirements and an approved procedure. They should not be selected from a generic article or copied from another product merely because the shapes appear similar.

Testing also requires suitable equipment and competent control of the procedure. The supplier’s proposal should identify how the specified obligation will be met and what records will accompany the component.

Understand what the test does not establish

A successful test under one condition does not by itself verify every material property, dimension or internal-quality requirement. Those obligations may need separate examination and records. The inspection plan should connect the tests without treating one result as a substitute for all others.

Where a nonconforming result occurs, preserve the traceability and investigate under the approved quality process. Any repair, impregnation or retest proposal must follow the governing requirements and required authorization.

Make the report useful at receiving inspection

The record should identify the component or lot, relevant procedure and test stage, together with the required result information. This allows the buyer to connect the evidence to the order rather than receive an unqualified statement of completion.

Tousin Metal can discuss pump and valve casting test requirements during quotation. A clear definition of what a pass means helps establish a practical supply scope and avoids disagreements after finished components are ready to ship.
